VW Transporter T5/T6 Wheel Arch Seals: The Quiet Cause Of Sliding Door Harness Failures

A VW T5 or T6 arrives in the workshop with sliding door electrical problems. The central locking on the sliding door is intermittent, the door speaker has stopped working, the courtesy light flickers, or worse, the door refuses to release with the key fob. The diagnostic eventually lands on a chafed or corroded harness running through the door pillar. The deeper question is: why did the harness get wet in the first place? On these vans the answer is usually further forward, at the front wheel arch where the seal between the wing and the front bumper has perished and is admitting road spray into areas the factory intended to stay dry. This guide is the practical view.

The seal, plainly described

The front wheel arch seal on T5 and T6 (from 2003 onwards on T5, continuing through T6) is a long, hollow rubber section that sits between the front edge of the wheel arch liner, the front wing, and the bumper. Its job is to direct road spray downward and outward rather than letting it travel rearward into the body cavity behind the front wheel.

Behind that seal, the inner sill carries part of the body harness that runs from front to rear. On long-wheelbase vans, the sliding door harness branches off this main run and routes up the B-pillar to the door. When the wheel arch seal has perished, road spray works its way into the sill, the harness gets wet, and the consequence shows up at the other end as electrical faults at the sliding door.

The diagnostic clue people miss

The most common diagnostic mistake on these vans is to focus on the sliding door area where the fault manifests, and never look further forward. The harness up the B-pillar will indeed often be wet and corroded; the workshop replaces or repairs that section. Six months later the same fault returns because the actual water source is the wheel arch seal further forward and has not been addressed.

The clue is in the wetness pattern. If the harness is wet for a long section running rearward from the front of the van, the source is at the front. If the harness is wet only at the sliding door area, the source is at the door (possibly a perished door gasket or a B-pillar pass-through grommet). The fix differs accordingly.

Tell-tale signs of a perished wheel arch seal: Visible gap between the wing and the bumper at the front edge of the wheel arch, road spray marks visible on the inside of the wheel arch in places they should not be, dampness in the sill area between the front and rear of the van, harness corroded for a long section running rearward (not just at the door).

The fix

Replacement of the wheel arch seal addresses the source. The seal comes as a left and right pair (because the geometry is mirrored between the two sides), and on these vans it is normal to replace both at the same time because they will be the same age and have weathered identically.

The fitment requires removal of a small section of arch liner trim, careful peeling of the old seal away from the body and bumper (sometimes the old seal has bonded to the panels with age and needs gentle persuasion), cleaning of the seal channel with isopropyl alcohol, and pressing in the new seal with even pressure along its full length.

Total labour is about an hour for both sides. The seal is the cheaper part of the job; the value is in preventing the harness damage that would otherwise need separate attention.

What to inspect at the same time

While the arch liner trim is partially out, inspect the harness section that runs along the inner sill. If the conductors look bright and the insulation is in good order, you have caught the seal failure before significant damage has occurred. If there is any sign of green deposit, brittle insulation or moisture, plan for some harness repair as a follow-up job or address it now.

Check the front sill drain holes. The body has small drain holes intended to let any minor moisture escape. These can become blocked with debris over years, which makes any water that does get in worse than it would otherwise be. A pipe cleaner or compressed air clears them.

Check the B-pillar pass-through grommet where the harness enters the body from the front floor section. A perished grommet here is a second water entry path and should be addressed at the same time if seen.

Why these vans in particular

The Transporter T5 and T6 share a body shape and seal design that is particularly vulnerable to this fault. The front wheel arch is large, the bumper-to-wing gap sits at the spray apex from the front tyre, and the harness routing happens to pass through exactly the area where any water ingress will sit. Other VAG vehicles share some of the design but are not as exposed because of different bumper geometry or different harness routing.

Vans used in winter, on motorways, in coastal areas, or in regular road salt service, see this fault much earlier than vans used as occasional weekend campers. By 100,000 commercial miles the seal is usually obviously perished; by 150,000 miles the harness damage has often already started.

Combine with the right trim clips

Refitting the wheel arch trim properly needs fresh trim clips. The original clips will likely be tired or broken from the access work. Trying to refit with perished clips means the arch liner will not seat correctly, water will continue to find its way in, and the new seal will have less of an effect than it should.

This is a job that benefits from a clear conversation up front. The customer arrives with an electrical problem at the sliding door. The proper fix is to address both the immediate electrical fault and the underlying water source. Explained well, this is an obvious good investment: fix the cause, fix the effect, do not let the same fault recur in six months.

Customers who understand the chain of causation are happy to pay for the complete repair. Customers who are only told about the door symptom often opt for the cheap fix and return later disappointed. The honest framing is the right one for everybody.

Wheel arch seals are one of those parts most workshops never think about until they have done the connector damage downstream a few times. The pattern, once seen, is unmistakable: water gets in at the front, travels along the sill, and surfaces as electrical faults at the rear. Fix the seal, fix the cause; fix the wiring, fix the symptom. Both are needed; only one will prevent the next return visit.
