Peugeot, Citroen, Fiat and Dacia Rear Tail Light Plugs: The 6-Pin Connector Repair That Saves The Light Cluster
Across the PSA group (Peugeot, Citroen, DS) plus Fiat and Dacia, the rear tail light cluster is connected to the body harness through a 6-pin sealed plug that has earned itself a reputation. The plug fails predictably: one or more pins corrode, the bulb refuses to light, the customer arrives with a brake-light bulb fault that turns out to be a connector fault, and the cheapest dealer answer is a new light cluster. The actual answer is replacement of the 6-pin plug for less than the cost of a tank of fuel. This guide is the workshop view: how to spot it, how to fix it, and why this connector fails on these cars in particular.
The connector and where it lives
The 6-pin plug is mounted on the back of the tail light cluster, hidden behind the boot lining or wheel arch trim depending on the model. It carries the standard tail light circuits: tail running light, brake light, indicator, reverse light, fog light (on some markets), and ground. On certain higher-spec models a seventh pin is added for the LED daytime running light marker; the basic body harness is still the 6-pin plug.
The connector is sealed when new and works as it should for the first decade of UK service. After that, two specific failure modes start to show up: corrosion on individual pins (typically the higher-current ones like brake light), and a brittle housing that cracks at the latch. Both produce the same general symptom: one or more functions of the cluster stops working intermittently, then permanently.
The diagnostic that takes 30 seconds
Customer arrives with a brake light bulb fault. The cluster has been removed and the bulb tested. The bulb is fine. The cluster has been swapped with the other side and the fault stays at the original side. That confirms the cluster is fine. What is left is the connector and the wiring.
Unplug the connector. Look inside the female side (on the cluster) and the male side (on the harness). If either side shows green or white deposit, that is the answer. If the housing is cracked at the latch, that is also the answer. A wiggle test with a meter on the affected pin during cluster mating confirms it: if the continuity goes from open to closed as the connector seats, the connector is the fault.
Why this connector fails on these cars
Two reasons. First, the connector sits at the rear of the vehicle where it is in the spray path of the rear wheels. Road salt, road grime, and water all find their way to the back of the cluster over years. The seal does its job for a long time and then quietly stops doing it.
Second, the cluster itself flexes slightly relative to the body whenever the boot lid (or tailgate on a hatch) is opened. Over hundreds of thousands of open-close cycles, the connector is stressed at every cycle. The latch fatigues, the seal loses compression, and the gap admits moisture.
Vehicles used in fleet service (Citroen Berlingo and Peugeot Partner vans, Fiat Doblo, Dacia Logan estate) get this fault earliest because they cycle their rear loading more than family cars do. By 150,000 commercial miles, the rear cluster connector is usually due for replacement.
The repair: replace the plug
The right repair is replacement of the 6-pin plug rather than attempting to salvage the existing one. Cleaning helps for a few months at best; the corrosion has wicked along the conductors and will continue to develop. A new connector with fresh terminals, properly spliced into clean copper wire, is the only repair that lasts.

The splice technique
Cut back the existing harness 2–3 cm beyond the visible damage. The conductors should look bright copper, not dark or brittle. If they still look dark, cut back further. This is the most important step on the whole repair; the salt has wicked further along the wire than the visible damage suggests, and a repair made onto already-corroded copper will fail again within months.
Match each new pigtail wire to the correct circuit on the body harness. The colour code is consistent across the affected models (tail, brake, indicator, reverse, fog, ground) but always cross-reference with a wiring diagram to confirm; aftermarket previous repairs may have changed the colour mapping.
Crimp with proper butt-splices, slide adhesive-lined heat-shrink over each joint before crimping the second side, shrink with a proper heat gun until adhesive beads out of each end. Allow to cool, tug-test each joint, then bundle the new tails into the harness with cable ties or fresh convoluted conduit.
Refitting the cluster
Before refitting the cluster, run every circuit through with the engine on. Brake light, indicator, tail, reverse, fog, hazard. Confirm each works at the cluster end of the new connector before screwing the cluster back in place. Catching a wrong wire mapping at this stage takes a minute to correct; finding it later means pulling the cluster out again.
Refit the cluster, refit the boot trim, refit any clips. If the original trim clips are damaged, fit fresh ones from a brand-appropriate clip assortment kit rather than reusing perished clips. The cluster needs to seat back against its rubber gasket with the correct compression, which only happens if the trim is properly clipped down behind it.
The customer conversation
This is one of those repairs where the customer has often been quoted a much larger figure elsewhere. A new tail light cluster (especially for newer Peugeots with LED running lights) is several hundred pounds in parts alone. A connector replacement is a small fraction of that. Being honest about the difference is the right thing to do, and customers remember workshops that fix the small fault rather than upselling the cluster.
If the customer's car is older and the cluster itself is also faded, scratched or has internal moisture, that is a separate conversation. The connector repair fixes the electrical fault; the cluster cosmetics are a separate decision the customer can make on their own timeline.
