Across a remarkable spread of Honda and Renault models the same 4-pin 12 V automotive relay does a lot of quiet work: switching the heater blower, the headlamp dipped beam control, certain accessory circuits, and (on some models) the air conditioning compressor clutch feed. The relay carries the part number G8HL-H71 from the maker (Omron) and is referenced on Honda as 39794-SDA-A03. It is small, cheap, and quietly responsible for a long list of intermittent electrical complaints across the affected vehicle range. This guide explains when it is worth suspecting the relay before going further down the diagnostic chain.

The relay, briefly

G8HL-H71 is a sealed, 4-pin, 12 V automotive relay with a 120 Ω coil. It is rated for switching loads up to roughly 30 A continuous on its contact pair. The 4-pin format means it carries no internal diode; the coil polarity is therefore not strictly polarised, but the manufacturer recommends a specific orientation to suppress switching transients. It is a workhorse part used across many Honda and Renault platforms because it is reliable and inexpensive.

The relay is usually housed in the underbonnet fuse box or in an interior fuse panel behind the dashboard. It is socketed rather than soldered in, which is convenient because the failure mode it exhibits is replaceable by the customer or a workshop in a few minutes.

The failure modes

Two distinct failures show up in service. First, contact welding: when the relay is switching a heavy inductive load (a blower motor that has aged into higher current draw, or an air conditioning compressor clutch coil), the inrush current and the inductive flyback at switch-off can pit and eventually weld the contacts. The relay then either stays closed permanently (the controlled device runs continuously, even with the key off in some configurations) or fails open (the controlled device never works).

Second, coil burnout: less common, but the coil winding can fail open after years of switching cycles. The contacts then never close because the coil cannot generate the magnetic field to pull them in. The controlled device is permanently off.

The welded-closed failure is the more dramatic of the two because it can cause the blower to run continuously even with the ignition off, draining the battery overnight. Customers report "I keep waking up to a flat battery" without realising the heater fan has been running quietly all night.

Tell-tale signs: Blower or headlamp circuit completely dead or completely stuck on, parasitic battery drain that disappears when you pull a specific relay from the fuse box, a relay that feels warm to the touch when the rest of the fuse box is cool, audible click missing when the controlled circuit is activated.

The diagnostic in three steps

The fastest diagnostic uses a known-good identical relay. Swap the suspect relay with another relay of the same type from elsewhere in the same fuse box (the headlamp washer relay is a common candidate; missing it for a day is fine). If the fault moves with the relay, the relay is the cause. If the fault stays where it was, the relay is fine and the wiring or controlled device is the culprit.

Second step, if you do not have a spare relay handy, is to check the coil resistance with a meter. The G8HL-H71 should read approximately 120 Ω between pins 85 and 86. Significantly higher = burnt coil. Significantly lower = shorted coil. Within tolerance = coil is fine, look at the contacts.

Third step is to bench-test the contacts. With 12 V applied to the coil pins, you should hear and feel a positive click as the contacts close. Continuity should be present between pins 30 and 87 when energised, open when not. Any intermittency, any sticky behaviour, or any need for repeated coil energisation to get the contacts to seat, is a failed relay.

The fix

The same relay used to switch a smaller load (a 5 A LED accessory feed, for instance) on the same vehicle will run forever. The blower duty is the killer.

This is why the diagnostic check should always include the blower motor itself. If the relay has failed because the motor has aged into excessive current draw, replacing the relay without also planning for the motor will produce a repeat failure within a year. Measuring the motor's current draw at the relay output side with the engine running and the blower at maximum tells the story: above 25 A on the blower means the motor is on borrowed time and the relay will fail again soon.

The motor inspection

If you have decided to replace the motor at the same time (or to recommend it as future work), pull the cabin filter while you are at it. A blocked filter is sometimes the underlying cause of the motor stressing itself, the same way it causes blower resistor burnout on the PSA/Fiat group. Clean filter, healthy motor, sound relay: that combination lasts another decade.

The customer conversation

This is one of those repairs where the customer expectation is much higher than the actual cost. Customers come in with "the heater has stopped" or "the battery keeps going flat" and brace themselves for big bills. A failed relay is a small parts cost and a few minutes of labour. The cheap fix is the right one, and customers are pleased to discover that.

The honest follow-up is to mention the blower motor as a potential future job if its current draw is high. Not as a hard upsell, just as preventative information. The customer can make their own decision on the timing.
